A unicorn. The synonym of success in the professional world. After all, the term itself was coined for the most successful startup companies in the world. But this article is not about Silicon Valley or startups. This article is about you.

It’s not easy to spot a unicorn - especially the mythical one - and yet becoming ‘a unicorn’ seems to be a universally applicable goal. Stand out in the crowd and shine. Don’t we all want this? Sadly, there’s no universal recipe, but we can all work on understanding ourselves and selling our assets in the best possible way. This article is the first in a series on how to become a unicorn yourself - in the job market.

If you’re sitting in a classroom, look around you. These people are just a tiny fraction of all students of your age. Students that will enter the job market at the same time as you will. In fact, around 20 million students graduated in 2015. Now look around the class again. These people will enter the job market having the same education as you.

Our generation is constantly told we’re special. And we are, when it comes to our families. Out in the wild we’ve got to show something extra to stand out if we want to succeed.

It’s easy to say “something extra”, but what exactly should it be? Well, let’s actually take a step back and start from the very beginning. Ask yourself a question: “What am I bringing to the table?” Let’s take the example of Lucy. Lucy is applying for a job to become a nurse. Lucy gave the question a thought and came up with the following answer: “I know how to handle medical equipment, I have an excellent overview of pharmaceutics and I am a gentle yet firm person.” Sounds simple enough, right? Let’s take a close look at Lucy’s answer.

Skills

The first thing mentioned by Lucy - “I know how to handle medical equipment” - is a skill. Skills are simply the ability to perform a certain task. Do you know how to cook scrambled eggs? Congratulations, that’s a skill - and very valuable one for having a delicious breakfast.

However, not all skills are relevant for all tasks. Cooking eggs might not be the core skill for being a nurse; that’s why it’s important that we know which skills are the ones we can proudly present to the world. Knowing your skillset well is a must - and knowing which of those skills to show at the right time, that’s what makes you stand out. Don’t worry, we will show you how later on.

Knowledge

Skills are closely tied with knowledge - a good example is Lucy’s 'excellent overview of pharmaceutics'. Knowledge is usually associated with what you learn during your time at the university, but having knowledge itself doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good or useful.

What you’re looking for is pairing the knowledge with the relevant skills, that’s where the sweet spot is. On top of that, in today’s fast-paced world, it’s the ability to acquire knowledge quickly, the ability to jump into an issue without knowledge and learning along the way, the ability to go 80% using the resources we have, that makes for an A-player.

That concept sounds oddly familiar, doesn’t it?

Attitude

What would skills and knowledge be without the third to the Triforce. Being 'a gentle yet firm person' is Lucy’s secret sauce. You’ve probably heard the words 'soft skills' already. Being a team player, being resilient, being persistent on one hand and patient on the other. These are what binds the whole A-player together.

Skills and knowledge on their own are simply not enough today; it’s the extra mile, expressed by the attitudes we are showing to the outer world, that makes a difference in the end. And of course - as you have probably guessed it already - they are the hardest ones to obtain. The soft skills and attitude are completely up to you, to your personal growth.

There we go, the three categories we should focus on to become a unicorn in the job market. So, do you have the right skills, knowledge, attitude? We will look into how to acquire these in the next article.

See you on the Boat! And traditionally... it's time to start learning the ESN Sea Battle Movement!

ESN Sea Battle happens twice a year and every time gets more and more attention. Few years ago Lithuanian delegation used to gather around 50 people and 2 Group Leaders. In Sea Battle 2013 Fall between 2000 students from all over the Europe Lithuania was already presented by nearly 200 exchange students and even 9 Group Leaders. Growing numbers only can approve the slogan of these years ESN SB which was inviting to “discover the Erasmus legend”.

M/S Baltic Queen for two nights actually became a boat that rocked with all the activities, organized by ESN, and all the enthusiasm brought there by exchange students. Karaoke evenings, hangout area for board games, classes for dance and languages – everyone could find his own and special way of having fun. Besides that 2 dance floors were always welcoming for students who wanted to stay dancing until the dawn.

Event for two nights from 17 to 19th of November participants had an opportunity to be a part of one of the greatest celebrations of exchange students life in Northern Europe. Organized by ESN Sweden as the main responsible together with ESN Denmark, ESN Norway and all Baltic States event already for the 9th year gathers thousands of students for the cruise between Tallinn and Stockholm. Following ESN Sea Battle will invite already this spring, so be ready and do not miss the chance to become a small part of the legend!

Traditionally, as spring progresses ESN Sweden invites to the legendary battle in the sea, for the international ESN community  better known as ESN Sea Battle. Thousands of participants, over night ceasing dance floors, two historical capitals of Europe and nearly one thousand booths for ESN members and for ESN countries visting exchange students. Huge event annually attracting more and more attention this year has awaited for a delegation of 150 international students delegation, supervised by 7 Group Leaders and a national ESN Sea Battle coordinator Karol Sakalauskas.

This time to share her experience with us agreed ESN Lithuania‘s Project Coordinator Sandra Rimavičiūtė, who is attending ESN Sea Battle not for the first time:

Every time while coming from the Sea Battle I bring lots of positive emotions together. First of all we were really lucky with the weather both in Tallinn and Stockholm, where we could enjoy the sunlight, so it wouldn’t make sense to complain about the weather. Probably this time one of the greatest our merits was a big Lithuanian delegation, which this time was tree times bigger than the last time, so we didn’t feel that little anymore between other Baltic sections and the possibility to meet your exchange student in the corridors of the cruise was definitely bigger. This time we have managed to avoid any big problems.

Program as always was involving and interesting; I’ve also managed to attend two hours lasting salsa workshop, which I wasn’t bad in though.

Also what I could tell is that at the first night Ibiza night club was took over by the members of ESN MRU Vilnius and we stayed there till the very morning and then we met the sun on the deck. Half of the day in Stockholm also didn’t take too long since we had a guide, which leaded us trough the city for the few hours and then we had few hours more to explore city ourselves.

At the second night we had a Responsible Party and Write on Me – White T-Shirts Party. Both clubs were crowded with people. The ones who wanted to improve their Latino skills at that time were invited to the Latino Party in Tango Lounge.

I am also really satisfied with the work done by Group Leaders. Oscar (the Head OC of the SB) and the security team of the cruise were also satisfied. Quoting the Head of Security at the ESN Sea Battle regarding the security and order at this springs' event: "This was the best event I've participated in so far!". Amazing job everybody!

I think that the result of it is the newly updated GLs standby system.

Also it was a real pleassure to meet people from the previous Sea Battle and to see other known faces.

Long story short, I loved event a lot, every semestre it‘s getting better than the previous one, we‘ve come back full of nice memories, positive emotions – these are the reasons why I wouldn‘t refuse to participate here once again.

Thumbs up and big like!

Sea Battle keeps growing and so we have:

On the 18-20th of November delegation of 51 people moved from Vilnius straight away to the capital of Estonia where from the biggest adventure ever called ESN Sea Battle started. More than 2000 international students, 760 cabins, 3 dance floors and 2 harbors – experience worth attention of more than 40 ESN sections. According to Sandra, it was an amazing experience worth trying over and over again. Well organized various activities in the boat, active participants and of course amazing parties – that’s all you may want when going to the cruise like this. Despite of that, people got even more. It was Tallinn and Stockholm which were charming because of their historical surroundings and unique stories which were revealed by professional guides.

This time Sea Battle came back different. With new coordinator – Oscar Boije, new logo, lots of promotional material and even seek of feedback. From now on ESN Sea Battle means not only joyful time, but also a qualified project, which is worth attending. Spring is coming, so consider joining ESN Sea Battle 2013 Spring!

Sea you on the Boat! And traditionally... it's time to start learning the ESN Sea Battle Movement!

One more semester, one more Lithuanian delegation joined annual international ESN event organized by ESN Sweden in cooperation with all Scandinavian countries and Baltics. At the late evening of 22nd of April more than 40 students from ESN VMU, ESN VGTU, ESN Vilnius University, ESN MRU Vilnius, ESN KK and one Group Leader of Lithuania Sandra Baltkojytė gathered together in Cathedral Square, Vilnius ready to experience what does really mean being with ESN, being at Sea Battle.

After 9 hours journey from Vilnius through Latvia, Tallinn was finally reached where the cruise Baltic Queen was already waiting. But before the boarding possibility to see one more capital of the Europe couldn’t be left apart, so delegation moved through the beautiful streets of the capital and largest city of Estonia. Only few hours spent in an Old Town, which is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it was already the time to come back to the port.

Boarding, which started at 4pm, didn’t last for long and soon cruise with more than 400 exchange students and ESN’ers inside headed to Sweden. During those 17 hours inside the ship a lot of happened. While Group Leaders from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia listened for the Head SB Coordinator Anton Lukeniuk, Sea Battlers tried to settle into their rooms, to make new friendships. Evening of the 22nd also invited for the much more activities. After a great dinner everyone was invited to the Starlight Palace for the Ships House Band. After that – Midnight Show started, which was followed by Disco in Ibiza Club. Party lasted until the morning. People who saw that would assure you that the motto of that night was “sleep is for the week”.

23rd of April was already there then everyone in their cabins were woken up by the voice announcing that there is only 1.5h left until arriving.  That day invited to explore beautiful Stockholm, to find many new friends since there were already around 1500 Sea Battlers in the ship after Scandinavian students were let into. Speed dating, karaoke, dance floors in Ibiza and Starlight Palace – that’s what the Sea Battle 2012 Spring has offered for its guests. And of course thousand of different things, which were left at the other side of the story.

During these few days lots of things have happened, hundreds of people met hundreds of new people, someone enjoyed seeing new capitals of Europe, some people were happy even about going with the cruise for the first time, but finally everyone came back home safely. Sea Battle is more than you can imagine. In all the possible ways. That’s why it’s worth going, because there everyone finds its own.

New season of ESN Lithuania has started since the 1st of October then the new Board has started their cadency. Not long after, first changes became visible then this website was moved to a new server. Since then everybody could notice not only new design of esnlithuania.org, but also rising visibility of our 10 sections, because of their new websites, which were created for every single section of ESN Lithuania. You can find them here.

Changes weren’t about to end here. Along with the old facebook group for common issues as flat renting or simply experience exchange, new page was created for posting news under official ESN Lithuania’s name. Same was done with Twitter and YouTube. The latter one still feels lack of your attention, so create or recheck your archives and send video files [email protected] that information about your activity would be spread all around the world!

During 3 months not only technical issues were solved, but also many international events have happened. And gladly not without participation of members of ESN Lithuania. Starting with CEP ending with Winter’s National Platform. More information is given below.

Only for ESN Lithuania Kenny Ho (NBM Dublin Head OC):

At first I was wondering why on earth did I apply for an international event? Their were high expectations from my NA and from the delegates which created my insomnia! However it was worth all the stress and I realise the best reward that I and the OC received was the memories we gave to the all the delegates.

The social night events we organised, the city, the university and the Irish people themselves all left an everlasting impression that will last forever and it can never be taken away from them. The OC and myself cannot hide our delight on how well the event went and more importantly we're very proud to be Irish, our friendly attitude, the love of a drink and our hospitality and just as proud to be European. It was a amazing and incredible experience to host ESNers from all over Europe, one that gave me priceless memories and new friends!

That's how second half of 2011 looks like in words and pictures. New Years has came with new plans and new challenges. With your initiative, positive mood and cooperation we will make them real. See you all soon.

From 14th to 16th of November ESN Lithuania delegation was participating in an International ESN event "Sea Battle", which is organized two times per year by ESN Sweden sections. This time Lithuania was represented by 50 participants (including 2 Group Leaders) from 7 different sections of ESN Lithuania: ESN Vilnius University, ESN VGTU, ESN MRU Vilnius, ESN ŠU, ESN VMU, ESN KTU and ESN KK.

In the morning of 14th of November our delegation finally arrived to Estonia, where they were met by cold sea breeze and a unique old town, which is included in the list of UNESCO's World Heritages Sites. Having a few hours before departure, it gave them the opportunity to explore the city. In the evening everyone gathered around in the Tallink Cruise ship Terminal-D, where they have shared tickets and signed participant contracts which binded to take responsibility for their own actions. Time to step in to the Tallink Silja Cruise ship "Baltic Queen" has finally come!

All the participants were settled in 4 place cabins, which were located on the same floor. This allowed them to communicate more conveniently. First evening they headed to Stockholm with only about 300 students from ESN sections of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The program of the first night invited everyone to parties, which were located in two different ship clubs: "Starlight Palace" and "Ibiza Club". Culmination of the evening was then few exchange students encouraged by hot blood and unfading enthusiasm were running on the deck half-naked :)

In the morning of 15th of November they have finally reached Stockholm. Here students could already feel the spirit of Christmas floating in the air, while Christmas Trees and Christmas Towns were being built in the centre of the city. After having some time for sightseeing, they came back to the cruise ship terminal, where it was very hard to get through queues, formed by Scandinavian students, who were waiting for their checking and getting on board.

After students from Sweden, Norway and Denmark have joined them, there were more than 2000 students on the cruise! Each of them had a great opportunity to participate in the informational meeting, where the NR of ESN Swedenn was teaching everyone the already so extremely popular ESN Sea Battle Movement dance. Later the evening program offered activities for everyone – starting from Speed Dating, Crazy Games, Pub Quiz, ending with a Karaoke event which turned out to be quite popular among international students, Salsa lessons or two different parties in the two clubs of the ship.

While foreign students were having fun, Group Leaders and security of the ship (in other words "the people in blue or yellow T-Shirts" as they were called by passengers) were taking care of everyone’s safety and maintaining order in corridors and territories of clubs.

In the morning of 16th of November ESN Lithuania delegation left the ship. "Sea Battle’11 Autumn" was over for them, but continued for students from ESN Sweden, ESN Norway and ESN Denmark. During those days and nights many things have happened. Some of them were funny, some – painful, but all in all everyone came back safely, with many adventures to tell and ready to repeat ESN Movement in up-coming "Sea Battle" events!
